The word "Siberia" originates from the ancient Tungus word "Shivir" or "Sivir" which mean "World" or "Earth".
According to the Tungus legends the structure of the world is represented in the unity of three "Sivir-Earths" - the sky, the earth and the underground world. Siberia has a long and interesting history with a lot of unknown facts. There are a lot of scientific researches and theories devoted to exploration of Siberia by different peoples. There are also hypotheses based on scientific facts that the mankind originates in the territory of Siberia and the North American Indian tribes came there from the territory of Siberia through the isthmus in the Berengov Strait.


Siberia is the territory in the Asian part of Russia. Till the beginning of the 20th century the territory from the Ural to the Pacific Ocean was called Siberia. Later, when the Soviet regime appeared two regions were formed - Siberia and Far East. Now the territory of Siberia is divided into Western Siberia, Eastern Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Siberia occupies the most of the territory of the Russian Federation. The total area is 12765.9 th sq.km. Though the density of the population is low. There are several natural zones (from Arctic to semidesert) because of the great length from the North to the South. Siberia is a wonderful land. Siberia is a green sea of the taiga and boundless spaces of the tundra. The greatest mountain ranges and steppes are in Siberia.

The riches of natural resources of Siberia are unique. In Siberia is extracted about 90% of Russian natural gas, 70% of Russian petroleum and coal. In Siberia the dominant share of Russian reserves of non-ferrous and rare metals is concentrated, the large reserves of chemical raw material are reconnoitered. Half of Russian wooden reserves, more than a half of water and power resources are located in the regions of Siberia.

Siberia is the land of the largest rivers and lakes. The unique flora and fauna. Ancient traditions of Siberian people living in these severe conditions since the beginning of the mankind.
